October 2021 VAT Changes in India

The GST Council are considering changing the GST rates in order to provide a more transparent tax system with fewer GST rates.

Currently, there are five GST rates in India:

  • Zero;
  • 5%;
  • 12%;
  • 18%; and
  • 28%.

There may be a move away from this and an introduction of three GST rates:

  • 5%;
  • 18%; and
  • 28%.

The merging of the 12% and 18% GST rate has been a topic of discussion for several years.

If the merging of 12% and 18% is approved by the council, some foodstuff like butter and cheese may become more expensive.
